Gargano, a promontory rich in history, nature and culture.
Peschici for its strategic location is the ideal starting point to discover the beauties of this ancient promontory. Old as the city are the culinary and craft traditions, which combined with the warmth of the "Peschiciani" will make you feel at home.
The town has 4,000 inhabitants; it is part of the province of Foggia and part of the Gargano National Park and the Mountain Community of Gargano.
Peschici is situated on the Northern tip of the Gargano, from which it dominates the coast between Rodi Garganico and Vieste. On the horizon, the Tremiti and the Pelagosa (Croatian) Islands can be visible.
In the last decades, Peschici has established itself as a popular Garganic seaside resort, for the quality of its sea and the excellent bathing, which led it to obtain repeatedly awarded the Blue Flag, a prestigious recognition of the Foundation for Environmental Education.
Peschici is positioned on top of an impressive karst cliff with an elevation of over one hundred meters on the Adriatic, from which it overlooks one of the most extraordinary and beautiful bays in Italy: the Bay of Peschici, which suddenly appears to the visitor arriving from Rodi Garganico. The town is of a blinding white that, united with the view of the bay, forms one of the most typical sights of Puglia.
The old town of Peschici climbs from the harbor to the fortifications of the Swabian castle. Within the it, there are alleys, hidden squares, cohorts, steep stairs, narrow passages, arches and white houses, typical of the Apulian coast architecture.
The coast becomes higher and more complex, with coves that alternate themselves with overhangs; bays, small sandy and pebbly beaches, often accessible only by sea, enliven the green coastal landscape. The pine forest goes sometimes right onto the beach and the pines cover the white cliffs and rocks. The sea, clear and warm, makes you want to dive into it and the rich seabeds are suitable for underwater fishing.
One kilometre from Peschici centre, there is the little sanctuary of Madonna of Loreto, built by a group of fishermen from Peschici in act of devotion towards the Madonna, after getting saved on a stormy night.
The fishermen split up their votes by building a chapel of the size of their boat. The Madonna of Loreto is remembered every second Monday after Easter.
Near Peschici, we find the famous Gargano National Park, which stretches over 120,000 hectares: it unificates the coast to the mountains, including protected fauna oasis established by Puglia Region. |
